Study Abroad
Immerse Yourself in New Cultures
All majors in Mercer University’s Department of International and Global Studies (IGS) are required to study abroad. We believe that you must immerse yourself in the context in which you intend to work in order to contribute meaningfully to its development goals. The IGS department offers multiple study abroad opportunities that will further your academic venture. These trips provide firsthand learning experiences that cannot be taught in the classroom. Our past study abroad opportunities have led us to intriguing locations such as Cuba and Dubai, and our students have returned changed and ready to make a difference in the world around them.
IGS faculty have led over 20 trips abroad since 2013. Over 15 of our students have received Gilman Scholarships, and at least 16 students have been awarded the Global Leader Scholarships, making the department one of the Mercer’s most active in study abroad.
Talk with your major advisor to learn about current opportunities that will fit your academic interests. Attend the study abroad fair to learn more about new opportunities.
Mercer Abroad
Faculty-led study abroad programs provide a unique opportunity to add experiential components to courses by making the world your classroom. Programs range in duration and are offered throughout the year, so you are sure to find one that fits with your schedule.
Mercer On Mission
Mercer On Mission allows you to apply your education to real-world needs. You will use your research and skills to make significant changes in the country you visit. In past projects, students have built culturally appropriate health modules, educated children about health and wellness, spread awareness about alcohol and drug abuse, and created health information videos for clinics. Previous missions have sent students to places like South Africa, Tanzania, Mongolia, and India.
