Outside the Classroom

Engage your community with science

At Mercer University, we challenge you to use the knowledge gained inside the classroom and laboratory to improve your community.

As a Chemical Commerce major, we provide you with multiple opportunities to apply your learning outside the classroom. Our Chemistry department supports an active, award-winning American Chemical Society student chapter. This student group leads a number of on-campus activities during National Chemistry Week and serves the Middle Georgia community by performing chemistry demonstrations at elementary schools throughout the year. These outreach efforts are designed to spark student interest in science and cultivate the next generation of scientists.

Participate in undergraduate research

Undergraduate research projects are critical to developing your problem-solving skills and gaining practical experience in a laboratory environment. This gives you an edge after graduation when you are applying to career opportunities or graduate programs, as it demonstrates you are a motivated scientist dedicated to the field and undeterred by challenges.

Postgraduate opportunities

Mercer University’s Chemical Commerce majors are well-prepared to face the challenges of additional higher learning. This may include attending graduate school, pharmacy school, or medical school.

Likewise, a Chemical Commerce major serves as a strong foundation for a number of career paths, including biotechnology development, biotechnology patent law, pharmacy and medical business.
