Apply Your Classroom Knowledge to the Real World

Mercer’s anthropology degree program challenges you to take what you learn beyond the classroom walls. As an anthropology major, you will have the opportunity to conduct original research, participate in Mercer On Mission, engage in study abroad, and take part in other unique experiences. Through these opportunities, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills required to become caring and committed leaders in a globally interconnected society.

Research

Providing undergraduate research opportunities is a high priority at Mercer. The anthropology major includes training in ethnographic methods, and students are encouraged to complete a thesis through departmental honors. Several Mercer anthropology students, including Class of 2023 graduate Jada Moss, have presented at academic conferences including those held by the American Anthropological Association and Society for Applied Anthropology.

Mercer On Mission

As one of the University’s signature programs, Mercer On Mission combines study abroad and service-learning to provide life-changing experiences for students through academic instruction, cultural immersion, applied research, and meaningful service. Department of International and Global Studies faculty regularly offer Mercer On Mission programs, including recent trips to Tanzania and Mongolia.

Study Abroad

Mercer’s study abroad programs immerse students in another culture, providing students with firsthand experiences that can’t be taught in the classroom. Cultural experiences such as those gained through study abroad are important in helping you understand other cultures as well as your own. Anthropology emphasizes the value of cross-cultural comparison. Anthropology students have recently studied abroad in Greece, Ireland, and Cuba. Most affiliate programs include one or more anthropology courses.

Unique Experiences

Anthropology majors have the opportunity to take part in one-of-a-kind experiences during their time at Mercer. For example, students in a cultural anthropology class went to their professor’s home for a sensory lab where they described, sampled, and learned about five different types of mushrooms.
