Discover Chemical Enterprise
The intersection of business and chemistry is generally referred to as chemical enterprise, in both the sense that a chemistry-based business is a chemical enterprise and the sense that the sub-economy of all chemistry-dependent endeavors is — holistically and collectively — chemical enterprise. The chemical commerce program at Mercer University was designed for students to engage the chemical enterprise technology-market interface with both rigorous scientific experience and the business acumen to succeed within the global market. This program is unique in that it includes an even balance of coursework in both chemistry and business and in that it culminates with a distinctive capstone course, appropriately titled Chemical Enterprise (course number CHM 405).
Chemical enterprise covers a wide range of businesses from chemically refined raw materials and industrial chemicals, through manufacturing specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals, through consumer chemical products and chemical applications in other manufacturing sectors, to chemistry-related information and training services. The chemical commerce major at Mercer University prepares its graduates to tackle the specialized critical thinking opportunities that arise when the product of a chemical reaction is also a commercial product. Chemical enterprise issues include hard-tech product development issues, chemical plant scaling issues, and financial decisions associated with the inception of and the operation of chemistry-based businesses.
Chemical commerce graduates pursue careers in manufacturing, sales, pharmacy, medicine, consulting, and entrepreneurship.
