Medical Humanities

Discover how science and the arts intersect

Mercer University’s minor in medical humanities examines health, the body, and medicine through artistic, ethical, historical, literary, philosophical, religious, and social scientific approaches. Students in the program will develop a deeper understanding of the subjective experiences of health care providers and patients and explore those experiences through study of artwork, texts, empirical approaches, and epistemologies. The medical humanities minor is a collaboration between the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Mercer University School of Medicine.

A minor in medical humanities complements the majors of any of our pre-health students. Students interested in the intersection between the sciences and the humanities also will find the minor fulfilling. A medical humanities minor requires 18 semester credit hours and includes classes like:

  • ENG 295: Written on the Body: An Introduction to the Medical Humanities
  • ANT 310: Medical Anthropology
  • ENG 238: Literature and Medicine
  • PHI 293: Bioethics
  • SOC 324: Health Disparities

Students also will participate in a special capstone course in collaboration with the School of Medicine.
