Department Statement on Race and Racism

Mercer University’s History Department encourages you to learn to think historically: to see how different forces have interacted in different contexts, to see how the past has shaped the present, and to see how today’s challenges are both unique and familiar. When you conduct and present your own research, you will become a historian yourself. Just as importantly, you will become a versatile professional and citizen who can ask good questions, find and use evidence persuasively, and manage complexity well — all skills greatly desired by advanced or professional degree programs as well as employers.

Majors and minors

• History (major and minor) — History majors may earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. Our courses cover a number of historical eras and regions whose stories impact our world today. As a History major, you will develop critical thinking and communication skills and become proficient in research methods and historical argumentation.
