Vox Populi
Vox Populi is the first magazine published by the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Mercer University. We publish photos, poetry, drawings and short stories. As you will see inside, we have a great collection of submissions in Spanish, German, French, Latin and Chinese. You will also find photos of study abroad trips led by our department’s professors. Our mission is to show to the Mercer community the outstanding work of students and professors of our department. Volume 5
We are delighted to present Volume 5 of Vox Populi, a double issue spanning 2024 and 2025 and filled with student poetry, artwork, and writing in Spanish, French and English. This volume features the oral history project “Integrating Voices of Refugees and Immigrants,” study abroad and Mercer On Mission experiences across five countries, and the work of our student organizations. Highlights include cover art by Lenka Anuraj, the Phi Sigma Iota ceremony and Sigma Delta awards, and faculty spotlights by Achim Kopp, Ph.D., and Clara Mengolini, Ph.D.

Volume 4
We are excited to present Volume 4 of Vox Populi, filled with vibrant content highlighting our department’s diverse achievements. This volume showcases service-learning projects from our Spanish classes, collaborations in French education, and the dedication of our faculty. Volume 3
Vox Populi continues its tradition of showcasing poetry, art, photos, news, and activities from Spanish, French, German, Latin, and Chinese courses. This issue highlights a prominent theme of identity, addressing questions such as “Who am I?” and “What makes me different?” Students explore the influences of friends, family, language, and society on their lives. The cover features a beautiful illustration titled “The Things that Make Us,” created by Harumi Kano Torres and Cassie Carver for Dr. Katie Rouseau’s French course, representing these diverse identities through a creative collage.

Volume 2
During the last academic year, language teaching faced significant challenges due to face masks and social distancing measures. The department adopted hybrid courses, leading to initial struggles for the faculty as they learned to utilize various technology tools to engage students effectively. Despite these hurdles, each faculty member excelled in creating meaningful lessons and assignments. This volume showcases their creative efforts, featuring original works such as poems in French and Spanish, skits in German, and prose in Chinese, Latin, and Spanish, reflecting the diverse cultures represented in the world languages and cultures department.

Our mission is to show the Mercer community the outstanding work of students and professors of our department.
