Keith D. Pinckney, Ph.D.
Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion
Keith D. Pinckney, Ph.D., joined Mercer’s faculty in 2026 after finishing his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Pinckney was born and raised in Atlanta. He is passionate about training students to read and interpret sacred texts and authoritative traditions carefully, critically and ethically. He is also a member of a number of scholarly societies, including the Society of Biblical Literature, the European Association of Biblical Studies and the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament.

Professional Interests
Pinckney’s research interests include: Torah, prophets, modalities of text referencing (i.e., allusion, analogy and inversion), constructing ethnic identity in Near Eastern antiquity, textual criticism, the early reception of the Hebrew Bible in Judaism and Christianity, and African American biblical interpretation.
Other Interests
He enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, playing and watching basketball, and listening to hip-hop/rap music.
Recent Publications
Pinckney is currently revising his dissertation, “The Problem of Returning to Egypt: Disintegrating Israelite Ethnic Identity,” for publication.
