Dr. José Luis Garrido Rivera
Assistant Professor of Spanish
Dr. José Luis Garrido Rivera’s passion for different languages and cultures started when he was 8 years old. Walking around his city of Huelva, Spain, he was mesmerized by people speaking different languages. Since then, he has been developing skills in English and French. Dr. Rivera lived for one year in France and another year in Belgium before moving to the United States, where he attended the University of Delaware and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the fall of 2024, he joined Mercer University as an assistant professor of Spanish to keep sharing his passion for languages.

Professional Interests
Dr. Rivera’s main research interests include the psychological processes involved in learning a second language and how these processes can facilitate language teaching and learning. He is also interested in students’ and teachers’ perceptions of the language learning experience.
Other Interests
Dr. Rivera’s personal interests include traveling, cooking (and eating), swimming, and martial arts.
